Several years ago I built an aluminum trailer. I bought most stuff from scrap yard, kept all receipts. Went to DMV, told them I needed to register a home built trailer. Played my fees and got my paperwork from them, went to troop D, they stamped it and I was done. Don't remember ever showing receipts but it was a requirement to have? Also, I do remember some stipulation about not using parts from older trailer except axle and wheels.

what paperwork did you have to bring to DMV... other than a check?

Just go buy a junk trailer with papers. Use that paperwork for your trailer and scrap it. It will be easier in the long run.

I've done 3 homemade trailers in Texas and all I had to do is make up a Vin and then they register it. I'm sure it would be cost prohibited but if you had some one register it in Texas then it could be transferred to you.

I wish I could help you. I have two jet skis on a trailer that were abandoned on my property and I cant do a dang thing with them.
