We rinse our rods and reels thoroughly every time they are used in salt water. Gentle running water from a hose is best, either flushing or spraying, but not designed to be a high pressure spray.

I don't wash my rods quite as often as i use to, and most of time after a long day of fishing I just let the wife wash them.

I never rinse or wash mine off unless they go under water for some reason, if that happens then and only then do I take them apart and do a full detail and regrease. also if I ever used them for wade fishing I would take them apart and do a full detail and regrease every time because you are too close to the water to take the chance they didn't somehow get dipped without you realizing it while netting or handling that big trout or red.

the day to day moisture from salt water fog and a little salt water splashed on them is nothing to be concerned about IMHO. the reels are not waterproof but my reels have never gotten salt water in them unless they go under water but I don't wade fish so they stay in my boat and if they get splashed they air dry and that's all I do for them.

I don't use high end reels I just use the average $40-$50 type and once a year I take them down for a full detail and regrease and that's it. my reels have lasted on average around 7-10 years.

all of what I said above, im only talking about spinning reels so baitcasting reels may be different because of their design so they might let saltwater in from the spool so those may need different maint.

I've found a sprinkle or two of Don perrion works the bestest, and then a quick lube with Grey poupon'!
