Default Biblical Theology of Fishing

God made the heavens and the earth. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and he owns the fish in all of the seas. If you want to catch fish, you should ask him for them in prayer. (Genesis 1-2, Matthew 7, James 1)

From Psalm 8

From the lips of infants and children you have ordained praise, because of your enemies to silence the foe and the avenger ...

When I consider the heavens, the works of your hands, what is man that you care for him, the son of man, that you are mindful of him?

You made him a little lower than all of the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor to rule over your creation, over the birds of the air, and the beasts of the land, and the fish of the seas, all that swim in the paths of the seas.

Part of man's dominion over the earth is dominion over the fish. But man's dominion is under God's authority, so you need to ask God for fishing success. Which of you, if your son asks for a fish, would give him a snake? How much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to you?

God reckons fish as "good gifts" even though there are more important things.

God also delights in making fathers look good in front of their children, especially as they take the lead as priests and kings in their families by teaching children to pray for their daily bread (and fish!)

Prayer is so key to my success that my children will not let us leave the driveway without praying for fishing success. We've done the "control group" thing too many times in the (distant) past by forgetting to pray.

So praise Jesus and pass the cracked crab.
