Default what the heck is this?????

Its on our fence and it crawls like a caterpillar and has a lizard like head.

it is a caterpillar, not sure what type of butterfly/moth it will be but its a caterpillar. There are some really cool caterpillars out there, some you have probably seen and never thought it was a caterpillar

looks like it is trying to mimic a lichen...



or bird poop?!

just found out that it is a giant swallowtail catepillar and mimics bird droppings for camouflage.

I used to get them on my satsuma trees, and put one in a jar to find out what they make. A couple days later it was in a cocoon and a couple weeks later it was a really pretty butterfly (maybe a "swallowtail"?). Which explained all the pretty butterflies in my back yard and the eaten up satsuma leaves. If I remember correctly when you disturb them they give off a distasteful odor.

google 'cool caterpillars' and check em out. There are some crazy mimics out there. Nature be crazy
