  1. Check installation
Make sure the system is installed properly. Click here for instructions.
  2. Check settings
Check that the TV is set to the right input for the type of cable you are using on the PS3™ (i.e., Video 1, Video 2, Aux, etc.).
If you are on the right input but the video doesn't appear, you can reset the video output of PS3™. Turn off the system then turn it on again by holding the power button for at least five seconds (until the system beeps twice). The video output setting will be reset and the video will be output at standard definition (SD) resolution.
  3. Another TV/ Cable
If possible, try connecting your PS3™ to another TV. Be sure to reset the video of the PlayStation 3 by holding down the power button for at least five seconds (until the system beeps twice). Also try using another cable that is compatible with the PlayStation®3. Before doing so:
    • Turn off the PS3™ system using the main power switch on the back.
    • Unplug the AC power cord from the wall socket.
    • Turn off and unplug the TV or device that the PS3 system is connected to.
  4. Check to see if the video port on the PS3™ is damaged
If the port appears to be damaged, you will have to send your system in for service.
If you occasionally have picture problems, try the next steps using the “Safe Mode” function.
Click here to learn how to enter "Safe Mode".

  1. Restore Default Settings (only if you can see a picture on the screen)
Enter Safe Mode on the PlayStation 3 and select "Restore Default Settings". If this doesn't work, try the next step.
  2. Restore File System (only if you can see a picture on the screen)
The PS3™ hard drive may be damaged or corrupted. Enter Safe Mode and select "Restore File System". "Restore File System" will attempt to repair damaged files that may be causing problems. If this doesn't work, try the next step.
  3. Try reinstalling the system software. (only if you can see a picture on the screen)
Having corrupt system software could be causing issues. Enter Safe Mode and select "System Update". "System Update" will reinstall the system update. If this doesn't work, your system may need to be sent in for service.

Well I used this troubleshooting cheatsheet and it worked for now, figured i'd post it for future reference if anyone has the same issue.
