Default Boat Title

I have a waverunner that I am selling, but it does not have a title. I bought it in Jan. 2009. Am I required to get a title for the waverunner before I sell it? Or does the new owner need to apply for a title? Or does it not need a title at all?

it is a motorized vessel that will be operated in public waters, it needs paperwork, if you didn't get any from the previous owner GOOD LUCK

Thanks. I get a title from LDW correct? I got it new from a dealership in 2009, just never went through the process of getting a title for it after it was paid off. All I have a document from the bank saying the the lien was released, just never got the title.

not called a title, it is registration, do you have numbers on the side of the ski? i am not sure if a ski is different than a motor boat, or if it is more like an atv, your best bet would be call baton rouge ldwf, guys on darnal rd may know but br definitely can tell you, just be on hold a little longer

Only a title on the trailer. The Jetski is just registered with the LDWF. Like a boat.

for watercraft, the registration acts as your title and your registration hull numbers act as your license plate.

somewhere around 2005 or so they started making titles for boats and motors but it wasn't required that you get them for older boats and motors sold before the changes.

most of the titles for newer boats and motors you buy were still optional (only if you wanted one) kind of thing, because there is no record keeping for them like with trailers at the DMV so a lot depends on how old it is, and how much things have changed lately. I bought a new boat and motor in 2014 and the dealer said if I wanted titles for them they would do them but there are no records kept anywhere to keep track of them and they only act as a more official looking form of "bill of sale" and they are not a "title of ownership" as most people think of titles. in other words, they cant look up the number on any title and see you listed as the owner of that boat or motor because they don't keep track of them. even with titles for motor and boat, the only recorded an documented "proof" of ownership you have is still the registration.

just to be safe, laws and rules change every year so if its under 10 years old its best to call DWF to see what is required.
