Cut them, drill a 1/2" hole about 2" deep and fill with straight 2-4-d

Yup, don't take long, or if you cut them down, spray the fresh cut stump with 2-4D

I bought some property a while back with about 800' of fence line that was full of chicken trees and did this exact same thing and it worked perfectly. Within about 3 weeks, I could walk up to the stump and kick them right out of the ground.
