Default Tries Something New Today

This is 7lbs of canned bacon. Had heard about it and did some reading but never tried it until today. It wasnt difficult and sealed up nicely. Gona wait a few weeks then open a jar, fry it, and see how it comes out.

The funny thing is you and Matt G opened the thread anyway.hehehe. There are lots of non prem memerbers scrathing their heads right now.lol
1lb of bacon slices laid out side by side on.parchment paper. Cut a piece of parchment half as wide as the bacon an lay on top of one end of the bacon. Fold bacon back on itself with the half parchment between the fold. Roll up tightly and suff in a wide mouth quart jar. Pressure can at 10lbs for 90 minutes. Thats the jist of it. Youtube has good videos on it Matt.

I am totally ignorant in the art of canning.

How do you "pressure can at 10lb"?
Also, what is the benefit of canning bacon?

Thanks for sharing.

Im no canning pro for sure. I mever had an interest in it until a few years ago. Its not so much a prepper thing for us but more of a forgtten art. Canning substained many of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Im 38 and in my generation it is a nearly forgotten art of survival. I hope to learn all I can and teach it to my kids and hopefully they will do the same. Our ancestors couldnt just run to walmart for what they needed but they survived.
The benefit Mako would be that it can be kept without refridgeration.

Mako your pressure is based on your heat source. The canner has a pressure guage. Use your stove to adjust your heat/pressure to where you need it

^ knowledge is power. when crap hits the fan and money aint worth toilet paper. things like canning and growing crops is what is going to keep you alive.

I know far fetched and Im not a doomsday prepper but the great USA is on its way to becoming a third world country with the way the govt. and people spend money they dont have. its very easy to see that some point in the future(probably not as distant as we would hope), the US dollar will be almost all but worthless.

I didnt really get into canning or raising animals until I hit my 30s. When I was a kid we always had hogs, chickens, and a garden. I think maturity has a lot to do with it. Its such a shame that we, in our youth tend to get away from our roots. It seems to come full circle as we get a bit older.

I am thinking, hence the question. There must be a good reason to do this and I asked so that I may learn something or be enlightened to things that I haven't given much thought. Thanks anyway.

It would also come in handy for hurricanes. I've been without power for 2 weeks before.

The way the question was structured made it come off as pretty cocky and a kick in the groin to Duckman's way of thinking (and most of the folks here).

These methods of preservation should be second nature to us and be passed down to our kids. It's like being able to shoot, hide yourself, call birds, fight, defend, etc... They are all things that may never be really needed, but being able to perform without thinking when the situation does come up can save your butt.

I'm not a prepper, but I do practice old school ways of doing things. I've got too much pride to be a slave to grocery stores and banks, or anything for that matter, and so should you...

Watched and helped my parents back in 50-60's canning all types of veggies since we had a big garden. I really didn't think about doing it till about 5 years ago, canned so much gave most away to close friends. It really is enjoyable, first because you know that you "could" depend on yourself for food if necessary. Love smoking meats, make all my sausage.

It never hurts to have a back up plan. That and its an art that has been forgotten by so many. Gooh is right. Its knowledge that should be second nature to all of us. If not for the ways of the old timers they wouldnt have lived and there would be no "our generation".
Im sorry if my original reply was too aggressive.
