Maters are easy. You really don't need to work very hard at soil prep, weeding, etc. Just pick a sunny spot, put 'em in the ground, and pick when ready. Extra work will make it all prettier and yield more maters, but you'll be suprised how little effort will translate to a regular supply in the kitchen.

We used to do a few hundred plants when we had a small farm business. We sold 'em fresh at a farmer's market and my wife made salsa which we sold for $4 per tub. We used black plastic mulch and wire cages, and I mowed between the rows to make a path to access for picking, but we went pretty light on the labor.

Eventually, the plants will burn out, so you can maintain a steady supply for longer into the fall if you plant a few new plants each month.
