![]() I usually use pogies / flour mix to bait shrimp and catch 'em. It really works pretty well mostly. I just thought I would probably try to make a different bait like cornbread / flour mix to bait shrimp. |

Is shrimp season still open for the rock?

Never tried it myself, but I read an article once about baiting shrimp that sounded like something worth trying. They used a modified pair of post hole diggers (extended the handles with some pvc pipe) to harvest some gumbo mud off the lake bottom. Then they mixed a generous amount of pogie meal into the mud. They formed the mud/pogie meal mix into baseball size balls. They threw the balls where they wanted to cast net and marked the spots with cane poles. Then they would go from spot to spot with a cast net. The gumbo would hold together well enough to keep the pogie meal where you wanted it but would dissolve enough to release the scent. Claimed great success using this method. Probably not as productive as hitting them in a narrow channel when they are moving out with the tide, but would work well at night for someone with a lighted pier.

Yes - It is still open. It s actually open to year-round shrimping. But there is a different between open season and closed season at the rock. See this picture attached.

I've seen some fellas using dog food. Get it moist enough to make patties about like a pancake size but thicker and throw them out in a few areas maybe 10ft apart. You make the patties flat so you don't have to worry about pickin them up with the net.
