Could be any kind of herbicide or pesticide you sprayed your lawn with recently. Also if you added lime or fertilizer recently.

Low oxygen levels, in water, kinda like "red tide". The ones that you found in your yard were lucky enough to leave, but couldn't find any water. This happens this time of year in shallow water marshes or ponds, due to the hot temperatures.

Never sprayed anything

Could be low oxygen
