There are a lot more options in Big Lake to get out of the chop or make something work for given wind and tide conditions. It's also a shorter run to try a few different things if the initial plan falls short. Lake P is harder to fish and you will usually burn more gas and spend more time running around than Big Lake. There is a lot more structure though which is appealing on calm days.

The worst day of my childhood was the day we moved from Lake Charles to New Orleans and the difference in fishing between Calcasieu and Ponchatrain was part of the reason why.
