You can select between video or still shots. You can set it to take continous still shots as well(every 1,2,5,10 secs or every few minutes), or something like that

Oh i got ya, you cant make a still shot from the video once its on the computer?

Press pause, hit the print screen key, edit from there.

I'm sure you can but i couldn't get a playable video on mine so i have no idea yet.

IMO the external screen is not worth the money. It cuts battery life in half and you really don't need it to aim the camera for video.
