Default Anyone own a GM 8.1 V8

Truck I am looking to buy has the 8.1 big block. Anyone own one? What kind of fuel mileage are you getting on the highway? I know it won't be good just want a general idea.

Bout 12-14 tops. It's bad enough that they don't even post it on the Moroney(sp?) Labels when they are new.

That is about what I figured. It will be a work truck so fuel will be charged to the customer. Have you heard of any major problems with that motor? I know the 6.0 had some crank bearing problems.

None to speak of. Not a whole lot of folks run this motor so, its hard for me to tell you for sure its a great motor. Never been told of major issues though.

have you looked at a Cummings, I hate to say Dodge sells for less but they do but in the case of a work truck you can't beat a Cummings for pulling and get good fuel mileage

The 8.1 is a 496 ci. Basically the same exact everything as the 454, which is as good of a motor as gm's small blocks. I believe its just a 4.75 stroke to get the lil extra cubes and they'll push out lil more horses and torque without having to max out any of the other rotating assly. If you get 14mpg youll be doing good.
