Default Louisiana House Votes to Mandate Drug Tests for Welfare Recipients

La. House votes to mandate drug tests for welfare

Last Update: 5/17 6:37 pm

(Rob Masson, FOX 8 News)
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House has voted to approve a Metairie lawmaker's bill to require drug testing of welfare recipients who get cash benefits.

Republican John LaBruzzo says the bill would help people to get jobs, since many employers require drug tests.

The bill received the support of 65 lawmakers, over half of the chamber. The bill also gained co-authors, bringing the total to six, but not before prompting a heated debate.

Several lawmakers said a similar bill passed in Michigan was overturned by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which does not control courts in Louisiana.

Others argued the bill unfairly assumed that people receiving welfare take drugs. Rep. Regina Barrow, D-Baton Rouge, said former Metairie Rep. and longtime Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke introduced a similar bill.

Yep, that would be the best thing that could happen but this would definitely be a step in the right direction.

Because you're paying for what they put in their bodies.

While I certainly do understand that logic, how many state .gov jobs/offices will need to be added??? How can we be sure these welfare leaches aren't smart enough to cheat a simple UA?? They've learned how to work the system for generations now, what stops it now??

A lot of the women start to reproduce & secure a section 8 rental, food stamps, etc.
Then the "ol man" (crack/weed user/dealer) moves in, the profits of the sales fund the entire households habit.

I honestly believe we underestimate the intelligence of a good portion of the recipients. Humans overcome adversity very well and are extremely cunning. If someone is smart enough to figure a way to get free rent/food/cell/tax returns, plus manage a 2006 Lincoln Navigator sitting on "swangas" , they can probably beat a drug test every time. They could also make a living without the freebies when push comes to shove.

But I guess you're ok to pay taxes for these people to receive free money and to buy whatever they want, party however they want, and have no responsibilities??

I have no problem with welfare system as it is intended. But I have a HUGE problem with the people that expoit/mis-use the system.

ETA - I want SULPHITE to run welfare program!!!

It will never pass. It will somehow violate their civil rights. Here's the logic they will use and it will be effective...If the people trying to pass this law don't have to take a drug test, why should we(welfare recipients)? I agree with the logic in the aspect of politicians should be drug tested too! If we did that, their would be a lot of them off the "system" as well.

As far as I am concerned, a politician is nothing more than a welfare recipient in a 3 piece suit!

I agree with taking welfare completely out. You don't work you don't eat. Only the strong survive. Keeping the weak around only hurts a species. Call it uncivilized but that's how it used to be.

Here's some logic for them. If I gotta take a drug test numerous times a year to barely make a living and pay 1/3 of my income to taxes which pays their way through life, they should have to pass a drug test to get the "right" to free money.
It's pretty sad that I can't afford a new truck but they can afford Escalades and Navigators on ugly *** expensive rims and tv's in the headrests. It's very simple, if you need government assistance no problem but if you can afford the finer things in life like $50,000 vehicles you need to get your *** to work and quit being a bum.

Ross, I agree completely! I've been on jobs where I've had to take 5 drug tests in 6 weeks!! It is infuriating to say the least! On top of those drug tests, I was having to pay near $1300/wk to their BS! It makes me sick and I'd love for them to reform the welfare system but drug tests are just the beginning!...

They should axe the use of these cards at gas stations and on "cold drinks", candy bars, $.99 bags of chips, boiled crawfish, crab legs and a number of other "goods" that those who work only can afford once in a great while. They should set it up more like the WIC program, that is widely abused too! At least that way, they only get to get certain, neccessity items! They should also do like the unemployment division, where they have to go out and seek employment. Do most of these folks actually look for a job in a serious manner?...No but, at least it gets em off the dang couch!

Agreed! Assistance should be given for 3 months, pending a drug test, and if at the end of the 3 months you dont have a job....TOUGH!
If we could put the welfare recipients to work, we could stop hiring so many illegal immigrants.

You are right, they should AT LEAST set it up to something similar as that. My g/f used to work at super one, and she'd have customers with $1700/month food stamp cards and she'd watch them drive out in a mercedes.

I don't think i could buy 1700 dollars worth of food a month if i tried. I definitely couldn't eat it all.

Its a ****ed up program for sure. My g/f also said that, "food stamp recepients" would buy steaks for their dogs, instead of dog food, because you can't buy dog food with FS cards. I wish I could remember half the stories she'd tell me, but I know every last one of y'alls jaws would hit the floor.

Some ppl would come in with 2 basket fulls of groceries and then only have $50 on their card, and when she'd tell them they couldn't get everything, they'd look at her with a question mark on their face like "why not?!"

Just plain dummies......
