I would steer clear of a Goodman or Amana.
York, Whirlpool, Sears, Carrier, American Standard and Trane are the same, Rheem and Ruud are the same, Heil, these are all pretty good brand names.
Trane and Carrier make their own compressors. Carrier has some really high tech heating units. But that can cost in the long run if they crap out. And they cost a bunch up front.
Most have a 5 year warranty on compressors, some have a 10 year warranty on compressors, the rest of the parts are usually 1 year. Some let you buy a 10 year warranty that covers all parts and labor for a couple hundred dollars extra. I would definitely ask about this, it is usually worth it.
The brands that have a 10 year warranty are probably better units.
They make several different styles for each size. They make a plain one with no safety's like a 5 minute timer for when the elect goes off and on. Pressure switches... ect. and a spray on paint job.
The mid of the road lines have baked on enamel, safety's and are a tad bit more quiet.
The top of the line has all the bells and whistles and super quiet.
Gov't requires all new units to be at least 13 SEER. But you can get more SEER for more money. In my opinion, 13 or 14 is good enough. 19 SEER would cost you a about double.
