Solenoid.....the contacts inside a solenoid due get burned and stop working. Think of a solenoid as a switch......this switch when it turns on, puts power to the starter motor. A solenoid usually has at least 4 wire.....2 small wires and 2 big wires. There may be other small wires.

When you turn the "start" switch, this connects power to one of the small wires on the switch. When this wire gets power, it sends electrical current inside to a coil of wires that makes an electrical magnet. This magnet then pulls a piece of metal up and this makes a "contact" to complete annother connection with the "Big" wires. This sends power to the starter.

If the contact point.....inside the selenoid....get burned, you usually only hear "1" click. If the batter is low, or the wires are not making good connections.....you will hear a Clicking noise.

A solenoid can be checked to see if it is working.......but this would be harder to explain. PM me if you want to talk more about this.
