Vintage Browning
 

My wife is getting new bedroom furniture tomorrow so we were clearing out the old tonight and found this behind the bed..........a Browning 12-Ga. Auto. It belonged to her GrandPaw and Dad. Best we can tell.......it's at least 70 years old. Is there a way to find out the year it was made?

I would call a gun dealer with the serial # or look in the "standard catalog of firearms"... you could also contact browning

I was told that the reason it doesn't have a gold trigger is because it's too old.

Salty.........there's a couple websites that you can put in the Serial # & It will give you the year made. Don't know them right off hand. I remembered googling it to find years on a couple of mine.

I talked with a dood at Browning and, Bruce was right, it's a Belgium-made Browning Auto-5. He said there's no way to determine the production year of a gun made prior to WW II. His chart showed from the early 1900's to about 1940. Going by the serial number, he said his "guess" would be somewhere around the middle of the pack.....mid 1920's. Damn, it's older than we thought.

Dad has one engraved with pheasents and such...it was his grandfather's and dad used for duck hunting for years, probably should have put it up...

Browning sold the patent to Remington so later models could possibly be remington...but you gots you the real Mcoy der Salty!

I have a Remington made like the Browning Auto 5 in 16gauge, and I also have a Browning Auto 5 in 16gauge. Both guns were used until only recently when we have decided to let them collect dust. When I was 17 years old, my dad "allowed" me to shoot his Winchester Model 12 in 16ga. on a duck hunt. The first shot went off but sounded funny, the second shot blew the barrel up just past my hand on the forearm. The first shot had the wad get stuck, and the rest was history. I though he was going to kill me, but he was only worried about me getting hurt. That gun was restored by Steinburgs(sp?) in Baton Rouge and never shot again.

used to hunt w/ an 1897 16 guage.
hammer gun w/ a very short pump action. can fire 3 shells from the 1897 faster than the A5. just hold the trigger and pump.

I have one that was my Paw Paws, he bought at steinburgs in '67, gold trigger, vented rib, Still have the black envelope with gold Browning emblem, safety booklet, carbon copies of the papers & receipt & the Steinburgs tag w/ the string that hung from the trigger guard.

Also have a Winchester model 12 , 16 ga. made in 1928

also Winchester lever action in a 38-40 w/ octagon barrel made in 1887.
