Preferred rod lenght for trout ...
 

I wont get into actions, price ranges, or brands to start a pi$$ing match.

I own from $69.99 rods to $549.99 rods and fish them all so I'm not biased on brand ( Bass and inshore ).

This is strictly about your preferred rod length for fishing 1/8 to 1/2 oz. jig heads with mostly a lil john or matrix shad attached.

And also your preferred rod length for fishing topwater walking style baits in the 1/2 to 3/4 oz. range.

This is based off of fishing from a boat and not wade fishing. Also bouncing between BL and the ship channel.

I usually use a 7' rods across the board. If I am jigging or using a suspension bait I usually use a medium action rod because I feel like it leaves a little more slack for the bait to fall when I am working it. Sometimes that medium action makes it a little more scary when slinging fish into the boat!

For topwater/popping corks I use a medium heavy with a fast tip.

I will say that rod prices are absolutely outrageous. Especially for being a recent college graduate. I went yesterday and picked up 2 Academy brand, 7' Medium Heavy rods with a fast tip for $19.99. I'll see how they do this weekend.

I like 6' 6" to 6' 9" ...ish. Mostly because I like to fish, rod tip down and a shorter rod works better for me.

Waterloo and Deuce, 6'9" to 7ft, in medium light action. Find it works well across lure selection. Medium light casts the lighter baits (1/8 to 1/4oz) very well with the 7ft good for popping cork use.

I use 7ft only. Better for casting.

I used to prefer 7ft for everything. Started wading more and got some shorter rods now even in the boat all I use is 6'5"-6'9".

6.5 to 7 foot rods I find work best. Cast further and when you set the hook, i think you have a better chance of the fish staying hooked up. IMO

7ft for jigging 6'6" for everything else

7' for both.

7' for jigheads and weighted swim bait hooks. 6'9" for tops and twitch baits. 6'-6'6" for flounder. i just like to buy rods and need an excuse.

6'6", fit better in truck bed

Thanks for the input guys. I've been jigging on 7's and tops with a 6'9 and a 6'10.

Figured everyone would give me a base line compared to what I was using.

shorter, faster hook set stroke. sets the hook in a bony flounders mouth better. i've heard it said that some flounder guys fish with a pool cue.

If you can find it it; 7ft., all star classic," shrimp tail special". Hands down best rod for spotted sea trout ever made. If could use a rod for everything, that would be it

I fish south of Chauvin and we fish shrimp mostly. The shrimp is suspended 18" or so below a popping cork that has a 3/8 to 1/2 oz. round lead weight separated from the cork by glass beads. The cork/weights/beads are mounted on 50# mono or coated wire. That said, a 8' medium action and 2500 spirex with 20 or 30# Power Pro will throw the bait into the next parish. That is important when you hit a trout rally and want to stay back from the school. It is also important when you are in the back of the boat and your partner is in the front of the boat when he drops the anchor exactly one long cast from the "spot"!

i scored 5 of these at a garage sale for $5 each. 2 had broken tips and the other 3 were never used. the guy said he was in sales and would buy the curado/all star combo for clients. they would keep the reel and leave the rods with him. i had the tips and eyes redone in different colors. my favorite rods.

Last year or two, I've been fishing with two Duce's and a custom OCR. All 6'9"s.

Medium light for corky's and medium for topwaters.

Since I wade 90% of the time I like a 6'-2"-6'-6" ml.

Yeah mid 6's for me.. 7's don't fit in my truck LOL

7's are good for throwing freelined shrimp or croaker.. and for throwing lite plastics. But I find with a quality M or ML with a fast tip you can throw light plastics plenty far with the mid 6's.
