Good trip gone bad

Started off the morning with calm seas, a beautiful moon setting and a georgeous sun rising. Started getting into some nice fish, then the bottom dropped out. Hooked into (what would probably be the most expensive hardhead of my life). Went to unhook it and it got me!!! The barb went completely through my middle finger and into my thmb. Took me a few seconds to figure out why I couldnt separate my thumb from my middle finger. Finally pulled my thumb loose then realized it was all the way through my other finger. Knew I was done then. Had to head in and go see urgent care. Just glad it wasnt the first fish of the morning. Be careful fellas with those lil bastids. Definitely not something I ever want to expierience ever again!!!!

We finished up not long after yall left. My boys said they are not touching hard heads any more.

speck-chaser 06-02-2015 09:28 PM

Matt, Im pecking at the keyboard like a chicken.lol

Didnt try heat, just iced it to make it back in, Pain was so bad I almost passed out. The tunnel vision was setting in.
Boggy, I might be right there with your boys with not touching them. Was telling my boy, I might start bringing the shotgun and blasting them off the hook. lol Got a kick out of your boys slinging them today, like some lil pros.

Yeeyigh!!

I don't touch hardheads. I grab the hook with pliers and shake them off, or just cut the line and retie a new hook if they swallowed it.

Fishing for bull reds we use 7/0 to 11/0 hooks, so we don't catch many hardheads any more, especially the small ones with the sharpest spines, and they hardly ever swallow the hook.

me too, and I don't let the kids or wife even get close

redalertlures 06-03-2015 07:54 AM

Had one go thru my shoe and my big toe after shaking it off the hook with pliers. I feel ur pain...my daughter laughed til she saw the blood lol...hope u heal fast!!

Capt. Travis Miller 06-03-2015 07:59 AM

Been there, not as bad but the barb went threw middle of finger and was pointing out the other end but didn't break the skin. I screamed like a little girl. Took me a long time to not look like a little girl taking those lil bastards off the hook. Glad you're ok!

Nitramiii 06-03-2015 08:29 AM

Wow, I almost get week just looking at your pictures. Heal fast.... Was this out of the point? Many years ago I had a treble hook lodge into my head, needless to say it was a long trip from T. S. to the hospital. It was hard looking at everyones expression of this lure hanging off my head. Haha

Get ya one of these. They dont act crazy once you touch em with it.

have been stung but nothing like that.

seen one of those 8 inchers fly of my Buddys hook and stuck in his shin on the way down. Fish never hit the deck.

Now all of them get the ak-rite.

MarshRat89 06-03-2015 11:07 AM

Those hook Flippers work good too. Just gotta hold em over the side so they don't accidently flip back into ya

Heat breaks down the protein in the poison. Wife had to go to emergency room for one in the foot and that is all they did was hot water. Doc said even if I could have put her foot under the pisser of the outboard it would have made it better.

Correct. I had one go thru the meat in between my thumb and pointer finger. Didn't know skin could stretch that much (this was before witnessing childbirth). I had red streaks going up my arm and was about to have to lay down before passing out when my FIL got me some hot water to soak it in. Almost instant relief.

I would have stuck my arm in boiling water if it would have made it better!

Rig Magician 06-03-2015 12:50 PM

Ice is the worst thing to use for that are stingrays. Always use hot water. As hot as you can get and stand. It will help break down the protein and stop the burn.
