First split

First split was pretty much a bust for us in welsh! We killed 2 specks and 2 snows and only brought one speck home lost the other 3 birds! Haven't seen many ducks and those we did see were cruising high...maybe if we get some rain and cooler weather things will change for the second split.

Agreed! My goose field in welsh is dried up solid!

Bob,

Our blind at Bunkie was slow on ducks. Geese were slow but moved on our farm after Thanksgiving. We finished strong on geese.

Fishmaster, are you north or south of Welsh? Just curious as some areas have been better than others.

Thanks
Robbie

Fishmaster19 12-13-2014 09:53 PM

South of welsh about 2 miles or so...

Top Dawg 12-13-2014 10:45 PM

Our first split has been solid on specks. Haven't missed a limit yet. Hoping it stays that way. (Fingers crossed). Been huntin south of welsh and thornwell area. Need some rain tho.

if your not killing in welsh area right now you may want to try and fix something: concealment, decoy set up, calling.... there are plenty of geese in the area right now. many reports of people killing from north of I-10 to south of welsh

Fishmaster19 12-15-2014 11:34 AM

I don't know...the guys around us haven't been killing anything either.

Big Hutch 12-16-2014 04:02 PM

That's not true around Welsh. Some blinds are doing well and some blinds that have done well traditionally aren't doing well.

We need some Artic air soon!!

Went on my first true speck hunt Sunday in Thornwell. Didn't get a limit but had a great time. Cool stuff. Saw a good bit of birds though. Talked a few into looking real hard but not dying. Will be purchasing a new speck call before next trip. Almost passed out with the ol haydels French horn.

Bass,

When you start calling specks in you will quit duck hunting. Nothing better in than a good speck hunt.

One day when I grow up and get rich I'll have me a field blind somewhere and figure all that awesomeness out. lol I did have one put his feet down 20 yards directly above the blind but I completely froze and didn't call the shot for some reason. That alone was worth the trip down there. I now envy all the guys that get to do it a lot. Especially the ones that can call em. I feel like I can make all the sounds fine, but as far as situational calling goes, i'm clueless. Other than talking back to them. So scared to flare em lol

funkyflemmons 12-19-2014 09:24 AM

lol, money not a problem to find a blind in welsh or surrounding areas, better find one for lease first

One of our leases is off of La 1126 right next to La. 382. It is having a better year than normal right now. I think the groups that are hunting on our goose leases are pretty experienced now though. Most of us have the logistics in place. I am surprised the location produced as well as it did the first split as it is a lazer leveled bone dry field. I hope second season gets better for you fishmaster.

Duck enticer, that you that hunts across from the Jeff Davis crawfish house?
