Just wondering if anyone out there using the Penn Battle 2 4000 spinning reel. Thinking about getting it. Didn't want to spend $100 and regret it.

I use one, you won't regret it. Spooled mine with 20 lb braid. The drag system is awesome. I also have a penn pursuit 3000 and a penn slammer 5000 all on 7' penn rods.

I have two a 3000 and a 4000 spooled with braid also. It has become one of my favorite reels.

How are they in comparison to a Shimano Symetre or a Sahara? I have never really used spinning rods but my dad does. He won't buy himself anything new so I usually get him one every once and a while. Those are the last two I bought him, but if there is a cheaper option thats just as good, it wouldn't bother me. The Penns I looked at were a lot bigger than what I have been getting for him. I don't know what models they were. He's getting older so weight is a consideration.

I used to only fish with Shimano spinning reels but one day at Ivy's tackle box in Morgan City picked up a 3000 series Penn Battle. I really liked the way the reel felt in my hand decided to pick one up to try since it was not that expensive. I enjoyed it so much I bought another. I'd be comfortable recommending a 3000 series battle spooled with 20# power pro braid as an excellent all around reel to anyone.

I have the Sahara. I like it no problems yet

The battle is a good reel, just not for salt water. After a few months the paint on mine started to flake off and shortly after the gears locked up and were too corroded to do anything with. The gears of the penn battle are made of pot metal. Penn offered to replace it, but I could not find my receipt. I received a Shimano Stradic as a gift, I would highly recommend it.

The battle 2 supposedly deals w some of the corrosion issues. I've used a battle for 2 yrs now w no problems. Stradic is a great real but twice the price

I bought 8 Symmetre 3000s that are now served well for three seasons. These are boat rods that the whole family and guests use, so they don't get a gentle treatment. We rinse them carefully after each use. They put one bull red after another in the boat. Had I known we'd been chasing bulls as much as we do, I might have bought 4000s or a reel with a heavier drag, but these do the job. After some rough handling, one of the reels had a hiccup, but for less than $20, LCT had it back in service.

I think every spinning reel I ever buy in the future will likely be a Shimano. The drag and feel are wonderful when fighting fish, and other than rinsing, there are no worries or big service concerns.

I use 3000 size reels for spinning. Never saw the need for a 4000 sized reel unless your using 15-17# test.

I always wash off my rods and reels after every trip. I pay to much for my equipment not to take care of it. I also wipe down my guns and lightly oil them after a hunting trip. Why wouldn't you? A few minutes of maintence on your equipment after a day of use will ensure it serves you for a long time.As far as spinning reel size I like a 3000 size as my go to for salt water. I usually target trout with the occasional red thrown in. If I'm targeting Reds I move up to a 4000 series reel. I spool both with 20# powerpro but the get much more line on the bigger spool. I also like to use a 20# fluro leader tied directly to the powerpro. There is little difference in size between the two reels but after casting all day I notice the difference. When I'm fishing fresh water I'm more of a pan fisherman and go down to ultra light under mount spincast reels. Ultralight spinning reels with 6# triline mono or a 2000 series spinning reel with 8# powerpro.

I keep a keg of Reel Magic under the console. Its on tap in my boat. Haven't had a reel go down since I discovered the stuff.

I use them about half of the time especially with popping corks. The worst of all is the Abu Garcia Revo. At $100 each I have returned both of them and gotten Penn battle 3000's. Good reels. I also have several shimanos which I am happy with. But my go to top choice is the Pflueger presidente. It is $60 bucks at academy and I swear it casts the best and has a sweet drag. I use 30 lb braid and love it
