Bait in Vbay
 

I've been catching bait at the weir on Redfish Point. It's mostly pogie with an occasional shrimp. I hear people catch a lot more shrimp near Marsh Island. Any spots in particular that a fruitful? I've always liked shrimp. Has anybody had much luck with pogie, cut up mullet, or other bait?

I prefer to fish a lively pogey over just about any other live bait. Depends on where youre fishing. i like a 5" bait for trout and Flounder and 6-7" for reds. I find the larger bait for Reds avoids the croaker/rat reds that shrimp seem to attract. Hell hole usually provides me all the bait I need.

Yep I do well at hell hole and the weir just north of hell hole. Shrimp mullet pogie.

Thanks for the info. Never thrown at Hell Hole. Is it deep enough to get the bay boat in there? And do you throw near that stream coming off of it, or does the whole cove hold bait.

You will be fine with a bay boat. It's a small weir. Attachment 75103

The mouth of the bayou is a little shallow, but ive never grounded running in on step.

Do not try and go with Low tide or a north wind, I have seen boats (including myself) getting stuck in 6 inches of water, trying to enter that canal! Be very careful if you have a bay boat over 20 feet!
This time of year the north winds are coming, but so do the fish!!!

There are 3 weirs that I know of in the Redfish Point area. I find the one in the on the bayou between South Lake and Fearman is better for shrimp, and the one at the GW Camp better for fish. I never really go to the one on the Little Bay side. Hog Bayou can be good at times also, thats the name of the one by hell hole. Usually let the tidal direction dictate which one I try to throw at. I used to fish live bait a lot more but have gotten away from it but I will got to the weir if I have someone with me that wants to try some. My Dad usually makes me get dirty.

Tried out the one at Hell Hole this weekend. Mostly pogie there too, and only a couple of shrimp.
