Bad News!

Lost 20 lbs of compression on one cylinder of my 1991 200 2 stroke Mercury. The boat place said it would be $5,200 to rework it. Think I may just run it until it quits and hope it doesn't sling a rod.

redaddiction 06-24-2014 06:26 PM

That's crazy! Never understood why that costs so much. You'd be better off buying a much newer, used motor for that price.

keakar 06-24-2014 06:38 PM

you better get a second opinion, might be a reed valve instead of rings (I think that's what they use) or maybe a burnt valve

either way a short block power head shouldn't cost that much and you could install it yourself seeing as how back then motors didn't have all the B S they have on them now

good luck with it

simplepeddler 06-24-2014 06:41 PM

don't run it......get some other opnions......if you run it, it could be catastrophic.......right now you may have a chance to rebuild....two strokes are pretty easy......look for a good smaller outboard shop.....not a dealer.....they usually suck

keakar 06-24-2014 06:43 PM

and look here at these options if it is bad, just to see what powerhead prices are going for

Considering the price of a new one it is reasonable. Quality parts are not cheap. Sure you can get a shade tree mechanic to to a popcorn overhaul with cheap aftermarket parts. You get what you pay for.

yeah but not worth it for a 1991 motor is what i meant. That's more than the motor is worth in running condition.

Yeah I can't argue that point. I would look for a good second hand motor. There is usually a bunch on the las classifieds.

A broken reed will not show low compression. 2 stroke outboards do not have valves.

A reman powerhead is only $2999

Yep, reeds have nothing to do until you suck one in a cylinder. Been there, done that. If you had a cracked reed you'd be blowing fuel back thru a carb. If it sucks in? You piston and/or cylinder will be trashed.Attachment 69923

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I know it's going to cost some serious cash no matter what.

keakar 06-25-2014 10:01 AM

with the age of the motor you should seriously consider parting it out and get what you can out of it to put into another motor (new or used)

my opinion is, I would NEVER buy a used motor because buying a used motor is just like playing the lottery, sure you might get a good one but lets be honest here, if the motor is good and still going to last a few more years then they wouldn't have bought another one to replace it. people buy new motors when the old one starts having problems. sure new motors break too but that's what warranty is for.

im also not a fan of those shops that rebuild broken motors and sell them at 60-75% of the cost of a new motor because its all about the guy doing the work and most of them are just looking to turn a profit and going to be doing the minimum to get it running reliably rather then make it like new again.

skinman 06-25-2014 10:31 AM

I hear you. Looks like I'll be better off buying a new boat. Even if I do get it fixed, I'll still have a 13 year old boat. I know I'll take a loss regardless of anyway I go with it.

BassYakR 06-25-2014 10:37 AM

I was just in the same "boat" as you man! it sucks... I ended up parting out the motors and selling the boat. Now im paying on a boat that I no longer own. once its paid off then ill get another.

mine is getting fixed now shoud be a couple weeks but not at that price

I have a 2005 Mercury 150 EFI XL for sell. It only has 169 hrs and compression of 126 on all six cylinders. It was kept inside in a climate controled shop (looks great). $3,500

jf522 06-27-2014 10:19 PM

That's the only reason I use aftermarket reeds. Not metal so no damage.
