Buying new 50hp

Hey guys, recently I blew my lower on my 1993 50hp Johnson. I was just going to replace the lower, but I figured I'd just buy a whole new motor that way I have a warranty. What brand would you go with? What have you heard or experienced with some?

Right now, I'm leaning to 50hp etec.

If there's any areas restricted to 40hp around you then look at then how about a Tohatsu 40 TLDI and remove the restriction plate

I would steer clear of the e-tech.

Take a look at the new Tohatsu 40-50 4 stroke. Thier new 4-strokes only weight 209lbs and has a powerful water pump.

What is your view and what are you leaning twards.

Buddy of mine had an etech. Stayed in the shop. Last time he brought it in they told him it was gonna cost $4100 to fix it. More than a new one. He told them to keep it. So basically he got screwed out of a brand new motor.

Hondas are the best motors being made today, hands down

easy to work on, all the latest and greatest technology without excessive junk added unless needed, super reliable, light weight, superior coating to all others except maybe Yamaha

no longer priced higher then other motors like they used to be, easy to work on but very few reports of anyone ever having problems with them but those that do have nothing but good things to say about the warranty repair process.

if I were buying today I would get a Honda and not even consider the other brands, not saying there is anything wrong with the other brands, its just there is too much right with Hondas to look elsewhere. by the way I just did a year long research into new 50hp motors and came to form this opinion based on that search.

You got lucky I guess we very seldom hear anything but positive about them.

Jrchip1 04-11-2014 04:46 PM

Got a 2 stroke Tahosu, love it. Those 4 strokes aint worth the extra size, weight or cost in my book. 2 strokes got their act together when the pressure was on.
