Pinch some grass off the ground hold it head high and drop it. You can see the wind direction and from how far it lands away from you the wind speed.

If you are on the water, you can use popcorn or potato chips to do the same thing. This would serve three purposes 1. Wind direction 2. Wind speed 3. Alert the yahoos to come fish the birds when they start picking!
