short day

There was an offshore trip canceled today due to high winds. I was called to take half of the boat on an inshore trip. The forecast of winds gusting to 35 mph was spot on. The steady strong north direction blew the water out of the area making conditions and fishing even harder.

The water was very skinny and the fish were mostly juveniles. I was forced to fish small ditches and look for the protection of the rozos. We did stumble on a small school of trout but I had to keep resetting the boat because even with the 10 foot power pole down hard in 4-5 feet of water the boat kept being pushed out of casting range. We managed 9 keepers before the rat reds moved in and the trout moved on. This was the high lite of the morning. We had to sift through several shorts in order to get the 9 for the box.

Our short day continued and I only was able to scrape up 1 flounder (of good size), 1 puppy drum, 2 (keeper) redfish, and 9 trout. If it was not for all the short fish today I would have considered it a bad day. At least we had a good amount of action with all the shorts. It could have been a bit better but I could not safely get to many areas due to low water conditions. Although low tide was before noon the water was still going out at 4:00pm due to the high winds.

Life is Good!
Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that.
