Whale Sighting???

Thursday we were 27 miles South East of Grand Isle is 175' of water.
My Dad, a friend and myself were rig fishing and moving to a different rig.
We were deciding which rig to stop at so we were all looking in the same direction at a rig about 1/4 mile ahead of us.

All of a sudden we all saw a huge splash about 200 yards away from the rig we were looking at. Water splashed 15-25' in the air. We all said at the same time "What the HELL is that?!?"

Three seconds later we saw a huge...."something" jump halfway out of the water and fall sideways with a HUGE splash. It looked like only half of the animal was out of the water and this part of the animal was at least 15-20' long and wider than our boat.

The majority of the animal was black but there was some white on it also.
We drove the boat up to where we thought the animal had jumped and did not see anything.

I have told a few friends that I saw a whale while fishing last week and get the feeling that no one really believes me.

I have racked my brain and cannot think of anything else in the gulf that is that big and would breach the water like that.

What are you guys thoughts on this?
Is it rediculous to think that we saw a what jump out of the water in this location?
If not a whale what else could it be?
All three of us on board were looking directly at it and all agree the only thing it could have been is a whale.

Help me confirm that we are NOT CRAZY!!!

I've never seen one but considering there are over a dozen different whales that use the Gulf I would say you aren't crazy at all. Even Humpbacks use the Gulf and that's a big son of a gun.

y'all aren't crazy. they have whales in the gulf

I've seen two whales fishing offshore of Grand Isle. Never saw one breach, but no doubt they were whales and not whale sharks, which are also very cool.

Could have also been a giant manta ray, which are also enormous and will make a huge ruckus when they launch out of the water.

We spoke to the wildlife and fisheries girl (who is pretty hot) that documents how many red snapper are caught at Bridgesude marina and she said it could have been a manta ray.

We got a good enough look at it when it came out of the water to say that it wasnt a manta ray. I dont believe that manta rays get that big.

I've seen a few whales while working offshore but that was in 5,000+ feet of water. I'd say it is very possible that it was a whale y'all saw.

I would like to meet and fish with W. I hear in "real life" he is totally different than his internet personality.

But no, he did not make this trip.

believe it or not there have even been sitings of killer whales in the gulf! So the possibility of you seeing a whale is not slim, and I believe you a 100% that you indeed saw a whale!

Seen many over the years. I have some old pictures somewhere from when I was a kid with a few next to the boat.

No idea. Guessing a hump back. I had a lot more pictures but lost them due to Rita. It was a group of 4 or 5.

Last tuna trip I took, June I believe, we saw 3 different pods of whales out of Venice. We think they were sperm whales.
