Fall Snapper Season Public Hearings

For Immediate Release
July 29, 2013

Reminder - Gulf Council to hold Public Hearings on Amendment 39
Regional Management for Recreational Red Snapper

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has scheduled a series of public hearings around the Gulf of Mexico beginning Thursday, August 1 through Wednesday, August 14, 2013. The purpose of the meetings is to solicit public comment on Reef Fish Amendment 39 - Regional Management for Recreational Red Snapper. All meetings will begin at 6:00 pm. and will conclude no later than 9 p.m.

Regional Management of Recreational Red Snapper examines dividing the federal recreational red snapper quota among states or regions. This division would potentially give states/regions more flexibility in choosing seasons and bag limits, but would not necessarily result in more fishing days. Under regional management, red snapper would remain a federally managed species subject to federal conservation goals, and the Council would continue to oversee management of the stock.

The first public hearing is a "call-in session" scheduled for August 1, 2013. To participate in the "call-in session" dial 888-323-2711 - the password is Regional Management.

The remaining public hearing schedule for Reef Fish Amendment 39 is as follows:

When do you guys think they will make a decision and set the dates for a possible Snapper Season this fall?

Trying to plan a trip and rent a cabin but kind of hard with no dates...

Prob gonna be Oct 1-21 but its not set in stone. The council meets in a few weeks. I'm sure it will hit the news.

No fall season.

Seems we already got our quota.

Don't start making plans to fish for red snapper in October just yet.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council's Reef Fish Committee heard Tuesday that recreational catch estimates generated by new data-collection methods far exceeded the sector's 2013 quota during the 28-day June season.

The new data-collection methods were implemented as part of the Marine Recreational Information Program.
The uncertainty surrounding the exact cause of the overrun - the new methodology or actual changes in fishermen's habits - now has a fall season shrouded under a cloud of doubt.

Yeah I saw that they are just using it to shut down the regional management idea
