They sharpen their teeth on the lead jack.
Lead jacks are better than neoprene jacks, but if you have trees near the house where tree rats can get on your roof this will happen.

Actuall for my parents house in Lake Charles. He bought some critter covers but I just can't get to all of them. Anyone in LC to recommend?

Once you fix it, you'll need to put wire mesh over the lead. That will stop them

I noticed the new houses going up in my subdivision went away from that. They use a square type vent. Looks much nicer.
