Show your Cajun pride

Legislation is about to pass a bill that will allow Louisiana residents to declare their Cajun lineage on their drivers license. For $5 you can put "I'm a Cajun" on your drivers license. http://m.iberianet.com/mobile/news/i...9bb2963f4.html

So you don't have to be Cajun to be Cajun these days? Funny how just 50 years ago it was the trend to destroy the Cajun culture.....

At least not to get the license plate. The drivers license you do have to have Cajun ancestry according to the article in the Abbeville paper this morning.

This is very true. I knew little about my Cajun heritage growing up. I had to do my own digging to find out just where my lineage came from.
Also funny how the French they taught us when I was in school would be great if I went to Paris but nothing like what we speak down here.
I know I regret all the time not paying more attention and learning more Cajun French while I had the chance.

Most of the money is suppose to go to the fund Cajun French education programs and other related organizations. Which makes it worth it to me I love my heritage and wish I could speak French more fluently. Sure would of been nice to know when all the old people were talking about me when I was younger.

Jcredeur 05-14-2013 12:56 PM

I could always tell when I was the topic of conversation. It would immediately change to French....

latravcha 05-14-2013 12:56 PM

If it goes to fund the french programs in schools it is a joke. That is not Cajun French and has nothing to do with our heritage.

I'm 62 years old and we spoke Italian to our grandparents when they were alive but they had all passed by the late 60's and, like a lot of the Cajuns, that's when the language stopped. Now, I only speak Italian when I hit my thumb with a hammer.

They now have programs focusing on real "Cajun French. I'm 24 no but even when I was in 8th grade I had took a class that was "real" Cajun French. Not just learning French though we learned the story about the Acadians the exile and all that.

I'm all for it too. I wished we had the option to contribute on more things i.e. taxes, social security, etc.
