Marsh fishing for Reds

Guys,

Coming over to Lake Charles for work next month. I will be over for a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about bringing the boat (18ft flatboat). I fish in the CoCo area for Reds mainly in the marsh/duck ponds. Is there any marsh fishing in the area for Reds? The jetties are probably too far of a run for me. I have been reading post about fishing the weirs. Can you fish behind them? I see some marsh to the west of West Cove, can yo fish that area? I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks!

You don't have to drive down to Big Lake to catch Redfish. There are plenty of places right in Lake Charles to fish saltwater for red's. There are several boat launches in this area to choose from. Right now, there is lots of flood water coming down the Calcasieu river and this will change the fishing for the next few weeks....but Red's can usually be caught under any conditions.

This time of the year, the redfish usually are stacked up at the Grand Bayou wier [southeast corner of Big Lake]. The boat bay to the marsh is closed, but the fish are there. You must keep 250 feet back from the wier. The fine is Big $$$ so stay back.

The salt ditch [just a little west of Hwy 27] coming off the Intercoastal water way, is a good place to catch Redfish. Keep in mind that the marsh in this area is all private so keep to the main channel. Choupic (sp) bayou is right near the Elender bridge [hwy 27] boat launch [free].

Thanks to Jared, Meaux Fish, and Gerald

Guys, I really appreciate your help and the information. Gerald mentioned the area off the Salt Ditch is private. So I can’t fish in the marsh on the East side of the ditch? Any issues with private areas in marsh off Choupique or Black Bayou? Are there signs for the 250 yard restriction at the wiers? Thank again for the help.
Mac
