I-210 fishing 9-23-09

Ray and I made a late afternoon trip to fish the Calcasieu river here in town. There was a good falling tide the first couple of hours, but it almost stopped by 6 PM. The water was stained but clear......1.5 foot visability.

The short story is that we had fun....clean-up was very easy....No fish in the ice chest.

We both caught a fish or two, but nothing to keep. We fished several spots using live shad, finger mullet and soft plastic. I hooked 2 good fish but one got off and my line broke at the hook on another. Ray also had a couple of hook ups....but they got off.

Along one bank we saw fish chasing bait fish in shallow water. We move down there and finally spotted a big flounder jump out of the water. There must have been a bunch of flounder.......as one would chase bait every few minutes in a different spot. We threw everything, except topwater and could not get them to bite.

We talked to a guy at the landing that said he had done well catching Specks this morning while the tide was falling hard. This evening he had not done very good.

It really sucked seeing them Flounder jumping out the water and not hitting anything we chunked at them.
My mouth was watering, thinking about some fresh Flounder for supper.

i've seen flounder jump for those little glass minnows, looks cool

There was bait everywhere and the Flounder were hitting schools one after the other.

I tasted the water and it was pretty fresh. I could taste no salt at all in the ship channel.

We've been catching reds off my dock...saturday night i might drag the lights out over there depending on weather...

never seen a flounder jump...never really fished for em either..too slow

The flounder were not chasing glass minnows. Looked more like small mullet.....hundreds of mullets.

sounds like a fun trip

I saw a big flounder jump out the water at some mullet a couple weeks ago.. caught that sucker too! lol I've seen them do that a few times though. You'd think they'd jump out the water flat but they dont. They jump like a regular fish would jump.

Nice report though guys

Went today and caught a limit of specks by PPG. Missed twice as many as I caught, fish were hitting the tail of my eel, lost a 5-6 pounder right when I was about to put the net under her:cry:.

Caught a nice Red and a couple of specks under some birds that were working early. Most of the fish I caught in 4-6 ft of water. Lost of shrimp dancing on the surface today.

Had some blackened trout and french fries for dinner!:grinpimp:

Were you on the East side, by them old abandoned docks or the deep channel where the ships run up to PPG?

killa k 09-24-2009 09:59 PM

I was actually fishing the Chevron Pipeline where it runs up to that little rig station across from the big PPG tank, caught several fish right at the station, but bigger ones while drifting back to the ship channel. Made a couple of passes.

We passed the mouth of both sides, but didn't go up in the canal yesterday. We was so close...

I got a tip, normally don't fish up there. On my way out there was a guy that looked like he might be having boat trouble so when I idled up he just says, "thought i had 16." Then he tells me he caught them all along the bank in the channel and went all the way up to PPG. Enough said. My wife called while I was out and I told her, she said "Isn't that POTLICKIN?":rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Nothing wrong with Potlickin', if you bring home the fish.
Just ask Jordan.
