Shrimping in BL

I remember when you could hardly fit another recreational shrimper on BL on opening morning of shrimp season. That was many moons ago, but I was wondering why you rarely see a shrimper on the lake anymore. Is it the cost of the gear and license? No shrimp? Did they close the lake to shrimping?

We quit because of the expense.

I don't see how you could come out if you were trying to save money but if you enjoy it then its another story..... should be plenty of shrimp there because we seen a lot of big ones in Prien Lake already.

Also there is still a lot of debris in the lake from hurricane Rita.

Weirs shut down a lot of shrimp movement in the lake.
There were a lot of Texas commercial shrimpers that came over here for opening week of inland shrimp season also.

Yeah but I noticed the drop off way before Rita. Still a few that shrimp the channel. Price of fuel, license and equipment definitely makes it unprofitable, but there's nothing like the taste of a fresh Big Lake shrimp. You can't get that out of a seafood market.

Someone should have told the dozen or so shrimp boats that were in Big Lake opening morning last week.

Feesherman 05-31-2012 04:40 PM

Probably because there is no such thing as recreational shrimping anymore. They made you start buying a commercial license just to pull a decent sized trawl! Not to mention the cost of fuel now.
