if you were to buy a new 25-30HP....

Been thinking about getting a new motor. My 86 runs good but mainly want something newer for piece of mind.ive always had evinrudes and Johnson but am lookin more along the lines of tohatsu, Yamaha,Suzuki. I have no experience with any of these butvhave hears great thing about the tohatsu and Suzuki. I was thinking about jumping to a 40 but cant see spending an extra $1500 for a minimal increase in speed from what I understand.plus I never have a heavy load and mainly fish just me.

I believe tohatsu, Nissan, and mercury are all the same engines 40hp and under.

30hp and under....the 40 merc is not a tohatsu/nissan powerhead.

Keywest18 05-08-2012 08:08 PM

Yes, I wanna say they are made in tohatsu factories by mercury technicians.

I have a 2007 25 hp 2 stroke Yamaha. Plenty power it's been a great motor.

Top Dawg 05-08-2012 08:33 PM

I would advise to not get the etec. I just bought a tohatsu 40 2 stroke TLDI and I absolutely love it. With the right prop I can run 40 with 3 batteries trolling motor 6 gallons of gas.

Montauk17 05-08-2012 08:37 PM

TLDI is a awesome motor.....plan on getting a 90 for my whaler soon.

Country Boy 05-08-2012 08:41 PM

Tohatsu all the way, my friend has a 25 and runs very well with lots of power also never had any problems with it.

If buying new, I'd go with the TLDI 40. Awesome little motor.

I always buy Yamaha. However, I just don't like the new 25's. I'd look for a good deal on a newer 25 2 or 4 stroke Yamaha the older style or get a new Suzuki or Tohatsu. Whatever you get I would HIGHLY advise getting electric start. It makes life sooooo much easier.

Buy a 40hp, you won't wish you had more motor and it will push your boat better if you get a 25hp you will be wishing for more and it will struggle with your boat.

I agree...if you are use to the older 2 stroke 25 the four strokes do not have the low end grunt.
