Mercury

I am looking to trade my 90 optimax for a smaller motor and have a man that wants to trade his 60 four stroke merc. Don't know much about the four stroke mercurys, so I am looking for opinions if this is a good trade.

I have one on a 1556 Edge. It is anything but slow. Your speed would depend on what you hang it on. It is a 4 cylinder, 62 cubic inch motor tht revs outa t 6250 rpm.

The fellow told me it runs 47 mph on his boat, not sure what kind of boat he has. I will be putting it on the back of an 18X48 homemade tunnel boat and if I can get 35 mph out of it at about 3/4 throttle, I would be happy.

Thanks

I would take it to a shop and have em hook it up to the computer so you know how it was run

Imo a tunnel hull and four stroke don't mix. Find you a 40 or 50 3cyl Merc two smoker.

That is really what I want, but haven't been able to find one with a long shaft that is worth what they are wanting for it. I don't run the marsh so it won't be that big of a deal, I just use it to run trot lines along the banks in the lake near my camp.

Warren: In late 02' I aquired a 4 cylinder, 4 stoke EFI, 40hp Mercury with the standard gearcase and a 60 ECU. At the time, I was running some fairly hot 60hp Merc 2 strokes, my best was 113hp at the propshaft. The unit was sent to me to attempt to destroy under NORMAL conditions, kind of a prototype type thing..... I have run this motor since late 02. It is on it's thrid boat, my old 2 strokes have all been sold. I would not run a 2 stroke if you gve it to me, I would keep my old slow 4 stroke. It is now on an Edge 1556. Since 02, everywhere this motor goes, it goes at 6249rpm, throttle to the floor. I change the oil once a year, have changed the water pump impeller once, and changed spark plugs last year. It still burns zero oil between changes. So fa it has not been passed by anyone's stock 60 hpoutboard, 2,4 8,10, or 12 stroke. This is the absolute first pass with this motor on the new Edge boat......
It now looks like this:

Only problem you might run into is tunnel size. A marsh tunnel is sized for the gearcase and prop diameter you plan to use. If you now run a 90 Opti, your tunnel is much larger than a tunnel for a 60 Merc. the opti runs much larger diameter gearcase and larger diameter propeller.

On boat that big, if it's a tunnel, I doubt you will see 35. Deduct 5 mph for the tunnel from any boat, that would make that motor have to push your boat 40 mph without a tunnel, a bit too much boat. I do not doubt the owner is running 47 on the right hull.
