VB- 11-20 - Smashed em

Well today was special. I took my wife yesterday and we caught 28. Took my sister today on her very first speckle trout trip. She loves to fish and hunt. She was raised with 4 brothers so she kinda had to get with the program or stay at home when we were young. Needless to say she can fish. We landed the Pelican at the Quintana and trolled out to the Cove. On the way there we were just casting at the bank and she caught a 14" red. When we got in the cove I showed her how to hook up a plastic grub and how to work it so she could do it herself from now on. I was tying my anchor rope on the front of the boat and she says she got a fish. Nice 2 pounder comes up shaking its head and she is stoked. We land that one and put it in the chest and before I can unwrap my rope from around the anchor she has another one! I dropped the anchor and we commence to getting blessed bigtime! We fished from 8am - 1 pm and had 50 trout and 1 white trout. Sis had fished many times from the bank at the State Park with fresh shrimp on the bottom and she would catch some redfish and had caught only 3 specks in her life before. Well she put her limit in the boat today. Here are some pics. Good fishing guys.

Saw you there EC. Great catch! I was with my wife in our kayaks. We had 15 by 9:30 and called it a short day.

That is just awesome. I can only imagine the high fives going on after she was slinging them over the side. You guys fishing under a cork or on bottom? What kind of retrieve technique? I went to weeks bay from noon til 5 and only picked up one lonely trout. I drifted, set anchor, but just didn't have any luck.

RAGINJROB - You were in the 12' and your wife in the 10'? My sister is getting her Yak Tuesday so she was very interested in seeing how you and your wife were getting around. Looked like fun and she is pumped. It was great for her to see another lady doing it. Boosted her confidence. Glad you caught some fish.
T-Bone - Presentation was critical. 1/4oz head, Salt Water Assassin Sea Shad color was most productive. I usually do not use these baits because you go through so many of them. Catch 3 fish and there pretty much toast BUT the tail wobbles at very slow speeds because it is so thin at the back. Thicker tail baits take more speed for the tail to wobble back and forth and therefore provide vibration. I think keeping it close to bottom was more crucial than the bait by far so take that for what it's worth.
What worked for us was throwing it out, let it go to the bottom. Pop it off bottom just in case you are on osyters and start a slow steady retrieve keeping it as close to bottom without getting hung up. If you are getting hung just speed up a little but not too much. It was important to keep the bait very close to the bottom.
I did see guys catch quite a few on corks with live pogies. Guys with corks and plastic did not do near as well.
We caught in the morning best so it may be that the afternoon was just not as good. Hope this helps.
