South of Mud Lake

Anybody ever duck hunt south of Mud Lake by Holly Beach?

Got a buddy that just got a lease and he was asking if I knew anything about that area. Only place I've hunted in that area is Sabine.

Never hunted that area but would have to think the hunting would be good.

That's what I told him. We used to bust that *** in Sabine and the spot we hunted was north of Mud Lake. Just wanted to give him some info from some first hand experience down there.

I grew up hunting around Black Lake till I was in middle school. We slaughtered the ducks. Used to hammer the bass too. My dad got out lease but my uncle is still in it today. They don't do very well anymore.

If the lease is just East of Holly beach then the hunting is very hit or miss now a days. that marsh used to be very hot 10 years or so ago but now it is either feast or famine and you better bring some food with you!

From what he explained to me, he is a couple hundred yards from the south bank of Mud Lake. Not sure who he is leasing from.....all he said was, he has a buddy that knows a guy.

Thanks for the replies guys

Walk in hunters? Is there public hunting there or something?

No. Been family land for many years. That is a problem we have down there is undivided family land and friend of friends hunting and crowding everyone else. Be curious to see who he is leasing from. Not much water accessible easily and forces people to hunt on top of each other. Had a big problem with this last year.

Man, I think the only good blinds left on Mud Lake are on the east bank and those belong to Apache. If the greenwings don't take over those blinds can be brutal. Rod and Gun hunts further to the east and they still kill a few ducks but none of that is as good as it once was. With all the high salt content down south due to the drought, grass is going to be in short supply. If he has another place to hunt he might want to pass.

Thanks guys. Not sure I want to tell him all the bad news I been getting, lol. He's already paid up and excited about hunting the marsh this year. He had a spot in Roanoke last year and they did really bad.

tell him to give it a shot and if he don't do good pass on it next year. Just look at jb the past few years it was hit and miss and last year they slaughtered the ducks out there.

Yeah, I'm not gonna say anything bad about the spot....just gonna wish him luck, lol. You right about JB, every report I heard or read from there last year was a good one. GC is a different story, that place is always on fire!!!

we should have a pretty good season this year again with more vegetation in the marsh.
