German Shorthaired Pointer

Any of y'all have a GSP? I am thinking about getting one this year as a Christmas present to myself. We have a Chocolate lab already but we wanted to start to get into quail and pheasant hunting so a pointer and flusher might not be a bad idea. And I think our lab is in need of a backyard play mate.
I have heard that they are great dogs but I dont know a single person who actually owns one for hunting. Anyone have one that they use for hunting?

I do not own one myself, but they are strongly respected in the North.
The ones I have been around at hunting clubs are pretty energetic.

I would suggest looking hard at the breeder and making sure you have the capacity to "tire out" a GSP!!! But that is just me, I like laid back.

They are loyal as all get out too.

I own two GSP'S they are great dogs with lots of energy. They are very loyal and love to please there master. The gsp is a very versatile hunting dog.

Thats what I wanted to hear! I am torn between another lab and a GSP... but the GSP's are a little smaller. How much do your's weigh?

Gundog 08-10-2011 07:29 PM

My male weighs around 65# and my female is around 50# if you get one you won't regret it.

I dont have one personally, but my neighbor has 2. Both are working bird dogs(quail, pheasants, doves, and even seen both retrieve wood ducks as well. Very smart, loyal dogs that will hunt their legs off! Cant go wrong with a gsp or a lab. Its all in how you raise them!

Yay! I am so excited!! I think I want the Chocolate Roan color but at this point I dont really care. Thanks all for the help!

My mom has one. Its insane!! She locked in the bathroom one day cause it kept escaping com the back yard. When she got home, it was out!! It had eaten thru the sheetrock in the bathroom and in the living room!!! But I'm sure it just this dog.......my mom seems to attract neurotic animals......

Ducktrickster 08-11-2011 08:05 AM

I've heard similar stories...unverified of course....but they are great bird dogs.

Dink 08-11-2011 08:34 AM

That didn't come across right.....

My mom tends to turn animals neurotic.......bait in this case, the dog was already nuts. She just helped it along a little further......

LOL! Well we have already had our wonderful Choclate Lab, Annie. She is 19 months old now. She loves to hunt and be in the water! But has a tendency to chew if she doesnt get enough attention in her opinion. This beautiful dog ate threw every computer wire I have in 2 hours. $364 later I got all new cables and she got to be locked outside for a while.

How can you stay mad at that face!
