Runaround Saturday
Was hellbent on taking my new boat offshore and chase some specks. Got to the launch in FWC around daylight. Looks like the storms were about through. Had a boat pulling out saying that they turned around when they hit 6 footers at 10 miles. A crabber at the launch said that the catfish were biting in White Lake but we decided to go to the Mermentau as the weather looked better to the west. Fished the bridge, no Reds. Went offshore to WC-8. Went through 4-5's with the occasional 6. Anchored down and caught hardheads. Came back to the jetties, nothing, the bridge, nothing. Pulled up and went to White Lake. First stop, bunch of Gou. Made a few other stops but nothing and it was getting late. Decided to go back to the first spot and mess around. Ended up catching 2 nice reds and a bunch of Gou. All in All it was a good day and at least we had something to pull on the line. Was a great trip for my nephew.

yikes...we ended up going out of cyp point. had to wait out the first big thunderstorm. We watching the water rise about 8 inches in less than 5 minutes at the landing. It was frikin wicked. When we got there the dock was out the water, we look back nothing but the cleets sticking out and 30 seconds after that they were gone. As soon as the storm passed the water was gushing out. Anyway we ran through the rain to the pass and stopped at a few reefs picking up a lot of dink trout which was fun, but we ran out in some pretty choppy seas and didn't pick up a spec. Did hook a spec that followed a white trout to the boat though. And a huge jack tried to eat my dads white trout as he was reeling in, but we didn't see it until it got to the boat. Came home with about dozen trout and a nice red. |

i don't think i know where the shell keys are... We didn't hit diamond, pretty sure the water would of been murky there as it was at the other reefs. Guess we shoulda tried it, but like it had said gulf was pretty sloppy man |
Yeah it sure is tough out there when the wind is blowing. Shell keys is east of diamond, but father off the bank. The big reef extends around 4 miles south of marsh island. Can be dangerous if you don't know where the reef starts and ends. Good fishing out there when the river is falling.

i'm gonna have to check that out. I much rather fish reefs than rigs. I can't figure out the best way to fish a damn rig. How much farther south is it than Diamond? Is there any way to know that I am there and need to start watching depth or anything? I always do watch depth but is there anything visual i can look for? |
Do you know where mound point is on the southside of marsh island? The reef runs south of that area almost 4 miles offshore. As far as visual signs there is not many left, watch the current breaks. Best to try to learn on a low tide so you can see the areas that stick out the water. I much rather fish the reefs too...

We went out of mermantau 40 miles in a 23' mako lol. It was a ride!

ok i think i found them on google maps. I'm guessing that big point straight north is what everyone calls the mounds? I'm not familiar with that side of marsh island. |
Jeremy. Its on my GPS. maybe we can make a trip, then you'd know where to go
