finally splashed the new boat, gotta few questions.
Finally got to take the 1851 cc out for her first real outing..Never really gotten to test her out until today.(good Friday) Well , besides the speedo being18-20 SLOWER then GPS, and my fishfinder not working ,everything turned out great. She gets up on plane in less than 2 1/2 -3 seconds without doing anything, Hole shot and whip the wheel quickly, she's pop on plane with ease and trim up some and she'll do 55 on GPS not full WOT. Was a bit hesitant holding her at WOT and trimmed up, she likes to track on her own at full WOT. Im guessing she'll touch 60 but'll without tabs or hydrofoil, she'll be to unstable.
should i get tabs or hydrofoil for my tracking issues? anyone know why the speedo off like how it is?fastest i might have been 55-56 but speedo 's sitting on 33-35? could something be wrong with my pitot tube? how is it supposed to be mounted via transom? http://www.seastriper.com/forums/pic...pictureid=4323 http://www.seastriper.com/forums/pic...pictureid=4324 |
Nice ride!

If she runs 50 or so with no issues, I wouldn't worry.
If she is a 2 stroke motor, and runs at 5500 rpms or so at top speed, she is right on. 4 strokes normally run at higher rpms, like 6000 to 6200 rpms at top speed. 50 is pretty fast for that type boat. Sounds like you have a screamer. |
i wouldnt worry about the speedo. the smallest debris can get into the pickup and throw your speed off. usually when u run through the first patch of grass it gets totally clogged. even when clean they arent as accurate as a gps. not sure how yours is set up but usually it picks up water from the front of the lower unit from a tiny hole.

**** on me......damn gps was set on KPH..lol.with full 62 gallons ..will have to retest soon. damn lowrance fishfinder had some corrosion on the power/data cable, and i got it to cut on and off...like it would come on, and wouldn't come up on screen, and then pop up , reading depth like it was already on, and turn off?
question...i've never been in a boat where it's difficult to keep it straight at WOT...kinda weird, like it doesnt want to grab/ the arse keeps sliding out from under neath... |
That's called chine walk.
You are getting too high out of the water. Might have to trim down some. Or your motor is not straight on the transom. You will need to make small steering adjustments to keep the boat from chine walking. If it starts, just make a very tiny adjustment to the left, then again straight. This changes the torque push that is making your stern move around. Don't make big steering adjustments. It will make it worse. |

Do those hydrofoils really make that much difference?

they make a difference for cavitation and if your boat has the tendency to porpoise. they have some guys in texas who put them on flats boats ive seen stainless ones about 3 foot long on motors. they said it helps keep water around the prop when jacked up. as far as fixing a chine walk i doubt it would do anything. like ray said you need to find the problem not add things to fix it. put a level on the motor bracket and make sure its level. im not sure what hull youre running but chine walk is usually operator caused at high speeds. you might just need to slow down.

Yeh cause im rolling 40mph in my 18.5 with a 4 stroke Suzuki 90 you should be rolling with a 2 stroke 175, but i only have a 24 gal tank versus that 62
I need to get something im just trying to get my shat from porpoising like it does |
well i heard with hydrofoils(cheap man tabs) it helps you get on plane quicker, at lower speeds, and mor stability in turns---but u sacrifice top end.. with tab's alot of offshore guys use em' to stabilize the boats both with front back lift and side to side roll? someone with tabs or better knowledged on the subject maybe could help...
porposing can be remedied easily with trimming the motor...im trying to think of the word that describes what im talkin about...yawing?? how high up on the motor bracket am i supposed to be (which hole)---lol |
Hydralic steering? If it is pulling to one side adjust your torque tab .

It's the small fin above your prop. Looks like a skeg. Most motors have em
Not sure about the evenru |

i have the same setup as you and i get 36-40 with mine. jack plate helped a little. i think i need to get my prop repitched i keep hitting my rev limiter. with a 175 you should be screaming |
Chine walk is mostly on deeper V bottom boats.
Bay boats don't have that issue cause they have a flatter bottom. There are a lot of things that may be wrong. But if it feels squirrely at high speeds, slow down. No telling what could happen. |
