Pond Construction
I know a there have been previous discussions on how to's for ponds....but i'm gonna be lazy and ask my own ?'s. Looking at constructing 1-1.5 acre pond. Any tid bits you guys can pass along? Don't know the first thing about ponds and there construction...stocking etc. Pond will have a spill way built on the low side as the land is sloped (N. East Tx)
Thanks Looking to start last week of Jan. |

I just had mine dug..its .5 acres with average 7-10 ft...wish i could get it to 15ft..but i'm out of $$$ :( |
Where I am from, you can sell the dirt, get the pond dug for free and make $$$ for the dirt.

We're digging the pond ourself. Grandfather in law has a dozer and backhoe. As far as the dirt....it will be used for filling some holes .....leveling out some of the land and building a spillway.

from what i been reading on pond construction.. a 3 to 1 slope is good for the sides...since you got a dozer and backho you can design a pimp pond and not have to worry about paying someone by the hour.....i'd shoot for atleast 15ft with islands and all kinds of structure/holes...as for stocking the usual are fathead minnows, bluegill, large mouth bass and a few cats....pondboss.com is definitely the place to learn about ponds.....i'm going all channel catfish....

Just make sure you have enough structure/variation in the topography in the pond. Doing so will allow the bait fish to move around and feel more protected. Just make sure once everything is stocked that you manage the pond. Yea, you could supplementally feed the fish with a timed release when the pond's population reaches its carrying capacity, but why would you? Fishes are tasty. :) I know you know that! It is very important to keep the predator/prey ratio somewhat balanced. Otherwise you will experience a population crash. If all the bait is gone, all the fish will be gone as well.
