9mm vs. .380

Someone please explain why so many recommend a 9mm over a .380

9mm=.354, so that being said a .380 is a larger diameter bullet.

What am I missing in the conversation?

Price of weapon ??

energy, velocity, external ballistics

if you do some research on actual shootings, service caliber guns do not drop people with one shot unless you hit head or CNS

simplepeddler 08-31-2010 05:22 PM

Price of ammo too

specktator 08-31-2010 05:23 PM

They say a Federal Hydro-Shock HP in a .40 S&W has higher one-shot knock down power than any round.

these stay in my gun at all times.... if i cant stop someone with 10 rounds, then i'll just die...

simplepeddler 08-31-2010 06:36 PM

anyone that keeps coming after getting shot at ten times deserves whatever I gotz

I keep two clips handy....one for them and if that doesn't work I have one for myself.....:D

Anyone who don't die in ten rounds will get the next four in the clip! If that don't work, it falls out REAL EASY and they got 14 more reasons why they should have picked on another guy!

ShadMan 08-31-2010 08:01 PM

Yep, it's all about the velocity. ;)

Personally, I wouldn't carry either a .380 or 9mm as a daily carry weapon. .40 is the smallest caliber I'll trust my life to and what I carry most often. If I'm in a situation where I simply can't get away with concealing a .40, I'll carry my .380 as it's better than nothing, but I sure wouldn't plan on dropping someone on first shot. Aim well and squeeze often. ;)

southern151 08-31-2010 08:04 PM

Aim small, miss small! A .22 will do a lot! Make em count every time or make em frequent!

ShadMan 08-31-2010 08:07 PM

Here's a good article that shows the difference in velocity and energy between the two rounds. The 9mm is 65% more effective. ;)

LaAngler 08-31-2010 08:10 PM

there's just too many variables to say which is better, you can argue 9mm vs 45 vs XXX from now until the end of time

a .380 is just obviously weak

wtretrievers 08-31-2010 08:23 PM

.380 with a 102 grain Golden Saber at the muzzle has 200 ft-lbs of energy

9mm with a 124 grain Golden Saber at the muzzle has 384 ft-lbs of energy

mikedatiger 08-31-2010 08:27 PM

Read this and it will tell you everything you need to know. It's not velocity, that's part of the equation, but so is mass, and shot placement. This article states that the .40 is the best, but the author is adamant that the 1 factor is placement!!

My favorite quote in the whole article: I reminded them of my 1st commandment of gun fighting: "No intelligent man or woman should ever take a pistol to a gun fight with any degree of enthusiasm."

10mm would be the best if the guns weren't thick as a brick

supercajun 08-31-2010 09:22 PM

i like my 357sig over my 40.

Dink 08-31-2010 09:30 PM

I want a colt python......not so much a carry weapon, but I still want one!!!! My favorite round is the s&w 40......get the right load and its faster than the 9 and more stopping power than the 45

speck-chaser 08-31-2010 09:37 PM

a 380 is like a 9mm short kinda like a 40 cal. would be a 10mm short. Look up the specs of buffalo bore ammo, just about brings a 380 up to 9 mm specs. some potent lil rounds.
