Dogs and SAgo Palms............This is not good...
2 Attachment(s)
My brothers little dog ate some Sago Palm......He caught him eating it and IMMEDIATELY took him to the Vet.....We have a friend that lost 2 dogs to this a few years back........They pumped his little stomach, but he's still going down hill fast........Keep in mind. He caught him eating it, and put him in the truck and took him in.......Vet started working on him right then and he's still in this mess..........The Sago Palm is a very popular plant around here......They make a fruit that has a sweet smell, kinda like anti-freze. Dogs love it, but as you can see, it's highly poisonous to them.............If you have dogs and one of these palms, it's not a matter of IF they will eat it, it's WHEN..................

Tim....thank for the heads up on this plant. We don't have any, but many in the neighborhood do have them.
I did a quick search......it said all of the plant is toxic, but the seeds are the most toxic. It also said that animals seem to like the taste of this plant. |
That's the case here.....he was chatting with the neighbors and the plant was in their yard.....he never noticed it before.......chewy ate some while they humans were talking........not good!!!

I was hoping for more comments.......EVERYONE with a dog should read and know all of this!!!!!

Wow! I never knew that. Got two of em in the back yard and a little dog.
Guess I'm lucky cuz the dog is always too busy eatin out the $&;") trash!... And eatin whatever my two year old doesn't! |
Thanks for the info Tim. My little dog eats everything, but I haven't seen her get near the palms yet. We have two in the front yard. She's at the vet until Monday though. The storm door slammed and snapped her femur in two and they had to insert a pin in it. Poor thing just had surgery the week before to get spayed.

One thing that can help if you catch them eating something like this is peroxide.
My little buddy did get hold of some valluum(sp?) once. I caught him in the act so I called my mom and she said to shoot peroxide down he throat. It causes them to vomit. It's tough to do cuz I was right there heeving myself but, it can save their lives if you catc em quick enough. |
yep, peroxide is good, its what I used when my puppy had found and ate some rat poison, its a pitiful thing to watch, but it worked

I've heard this about saga palms, every yard in Baton Rouge has them.
My Jack Russell got into some rat poison when he was about 6 months old, rushed him to the vet and had to help them pump his stomach. Not a pleasant thing but it saved his life. He is 10 years old now and still shedding hair on my couch. |
And oleanders...Got both sagos and oleanders in my yard. And watch the Poinsetta around Christmas time. ;)
Here's a list of all the plants that are poisonous to dogs. Many of them are very common. All you pot growers, marijuana is poisonous to dogs. :p http://www.dogpack.com/health/poisonplants.htm |
