Ducks around Welsh?
I am looking at a lease near welsh are there ducks in the area or just mostly geese?

Meaux, it really depends on how far north and what farm you are looking at. On days I have heard of birds being killed up there but I don't believe there is any consistancy to the hunting any longer (sugar cane). Like anything else, the farms that really do well aren't leased but the ones that don't have a $hitload of blinds. How much they asking per blind? I know a farmer with a blind availiable for $5,000 and the hunting is pretty good.

Been hunting Welsh for years. This year was hit and miss depending on weather, never left emty handed. The blinds on this farm starts at $4500.00 this includes water and water buffalo.

I have made a bunch of teals hunts years ago around Welsh and did very well. I have some friends that hunt around there and they do pretty good.

i dont know why but the hunting is alot better if you go a few miles further south in the thornwell, lake arthur, and klondike areas.

Rice fields are done for good consistent hunting, marshes will kill 2:1 against rice day in day out. Everyone wants an easy hunt plus birds and it ain't out there anymore. |
I was in welsh today, didnt see any ducks or geese.:grinpimp:

The more you can go North of the interstate the better........However, like most rice field locations it is always good to know how to blow a spec call. I suck at it. However, one of the guys that I am sharing my lease with this year is great at blowing a spec call.......makes all the difference in the world......for the most part anyone can blow a duck call however not anyone can blow a spec call..GOOD.........makes a big difference killing 3 ducks compared to killing 3 ducks and 3 specs.............also, that crap of setting out 200 or 300 deks is for the birds.......we set out 100 deks and kill just as many birds as setting out 200-300....

specs are soo good!

Like CptD said......better to go as South towards the marsh as possible....however, like I stated if North of I-10 then go North of it as much as you can. Also, like someone mentioned, find out why this lease is open. I picked up a lease about 1/2 mile south of where I have hunted for the past 5 years because I knew the history of it. I had been calling the land owner for 4 years and they always said if a blind comes open you have first shot at it...well one the guys that leased it got crossed ways with the land owner....well it finally happen......they shoot a lot more than my prior lease which was a little North of this place...you would not believe how a blind being 1/3 mile from another blind could be a lot better.....also blind placement is a big factor too.........good luck...... |
Keeping my mouth shut for now, but...............Bob..I may have something for you IN the Marsh........if it comes up like its supposed to, ill let you know.....
