PERDIDO PASS - This is one of *two one-ton tarballs found south of Perdido Pass.

The crew of the lift boat -- "Sailfish" -- which is a Vessel of Opportunity -- discovered them.

A petty officer with the US Coast Guard took a picture on Saturday.

How dare you put such an ugly picture up to represent the early age of that tarball!:*****:

The tarball in the first pic has value and could be put to work somewhere...:rotfl:

your not putting 2000lbs in a personal basket........and that so called tar ball in no where near one ton........

tumbleweed 06-15-2010 11:00 AM

at least it was all in one piece for them to pick up. Makes it pretty easy to pick up, instead of 1,000 little bits.

Vessel of Oppurtuntity or VOO is the personal boats owned by fishermen, shrimpers ect. that BP hires to work the oil spill. Lay booms, check on booms, pull skimmers and so on.

Ray 06-17-2010 11:05 AM

A hastily invented skimming boom is collecting tarballs floating in the Gulf of Mexico and congealing them into 1-ton masses of oil.
Coast Guard Capt. Steven Poulin said Wednesday that more versions of the recently devised skimming system are being built for vessels skimming oil.
The equipment was designed by a BP contractor who leads a skimming taskforce in Poulin's sector, which serves Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.
A shrimp boat fitted with outriggers drags oil-collection bags made of perforated webbing behind it. As the ship moves forward, the bags fill with oil that combines into a semi-solid mass.
The resulting tar balls are thick enough that chains and tackle can sit on top of them without sinking.
