According to most reliable references, no more than 22% or fewer of the southern population owned slaves. The cost of one slave was around $100,000 to $200,000 in twenty first century dollars. The most wealthy 1 percent or so of southerners (like Thomas Jefferson or George Washington) owned around 100 to 200 slaves at any one time. Within weeks, Dorada captured a schooner loaded with over $9,000 in goods. The captured schooner was not considered a good fit for privateering, so after unloading its cargo the Lafittes gave the ship back to its former captain and crew.[16] The Lafittes gained a reputation for treating captive crew members well, and often gave the ships back to their original crew.[17]
