This is what I got from the coordinates. Is this correct?

This is basicly what I got as well.... The only thing I can't quiet understand is the Lat. coordinates for TP4 and TP5... The last set of numbers with one digit and then a dot with the five or so numbers after that is a little confusing... Of course I'm a long shot from being even an amature survey helper... I was once told the only dumb question is the one that you don't ask... Guess I'm going with it like this as well unless someone breaks down the TP4 & TP5 into a (Example: 37.487) number...

If you swap coordinates 3 and 4 then it would make a rectangle. Just an idea.

I ran through the middle of this with my HDS side scan I went past the trash pile waypoint on the hook and line map which basically right in the middle of this area. As redaddiction said earlier it is all silted up. I didn't see jack.

Another BTW, about five years ago, a friend of mine and I were fishing very near what appears in this pic as TP1 and we loaded up on very nice trout along with many other boats. We were all lined up like a parade as the fish kept moving back and forth. Ah yes, the good old days. |

The boat gang were stacked up between these coordinates and mud point. Not sure if they were catching or not. the water was still a bit muddy then.

So what would the final coordinates be for TP4 & TP5... This way I can go ahead and put it in my Humminbird... I want to run the sides can over the area as well... Thanks in advance for the final coordinates....

I grew up on Vbay and always considered the Trash Pile a little west of those coordinates. I learned it from the ole timers I fished with back in the day when we didn't know what a GPS was. We used to draw a line from the salt mine on weeks island to the second marker (#18) out of the commercial canal, and center yourself halfway between that marker and mud point. The problem with this today is that mud point is nearly 1/4 mile shorter. Anyway, the stumps are nearly gone, but there still irregularities on the bottom that you will pick up with your sonar. I picked them up on Monday, when we stopped there for a little while. I think the exact location has always been debated. Most just fish where the rest of the boats are, so it's the first guy's fault if it's the wrong place!

I cleaned up the table that I provided to include DM.D values.
DMS_________________________________DM.D__________ ___________ N 29° 47' 29.9760" W 91° 52' 20.2476" TP1 N 29° 47.4996' W 91° 52.3375' N 29° 48' 19.4142" W 91° 51' 59.5938" TP2 N 29° 48.3236' W 91° 51.9932' N 29° 48' 18.7992" W 91° 50' 58.3506" TP3 N 29° 48.3133' W 91° 50.9725' N 29° 48' 02.1132" W 91° 50' 46.2444" TP4 N 29° 48.0352' W 91° 50.7707' N 29° 48' 01.4940" W 91° 51' 28.9722" TP5 N 29° 48.0249' W 91° 51.4829' Please keep in mind that the values were converted from LORAN C and have an accuracy of +- 100'. This survey was done when the Port of Iberia was studying the feasibility of digging a deep water channel from the port, through Vermillion Bay, to Southwest Pass. They did not want the Trash Pile to be affected by the channel. Since the water was too shallow to use side scanning sonar, we utilized underwater cameras and divers to determine the boundaries. At the time GPS was not available and we used Loran C to determine the location.The project never did materialize. Last edited by cajun; 11-14-2013 at 10:51 AM. Reason: Addition. |

By the way, at the time that the survey was made, TP4 was close to and just North of mud point. That may explain the previous comments about the location.

i have lots of numbers and there are many places, thats just what we consider mud point, trash pile is out west and lots more stumps we used to drift with jig head and dead shrimp if we'd hang up we'd drop anchor and fish if there were lots of hangs mark it no fish pick anchor up and continue drifting. used to murder reds like that. now i have 8-10 stump clusters marked and drift em all until we find fish.
