the smartest thing you can do is spend the extra $ on the front end and get the MAX HP for the boat . for 2 reasons 1 if itsd underpowered you are gonna wanna upgrade the motor and lose yer arse youll be upside down in it. and 2 when you go to sell it you will have a leading egde on you boat compaired to others of the same make but less hp. you also can save on gas and stress on your motor by getting the higher hp because you dont have to run your boat wide open to get somewhere quick you could just run it at the sweet spot of 400-4300 rpm and get the best gas mileage . i had a 115 on a 20 xpress ( very light boat) could only run it 40mph tops .... that boat knew 2 speeds idle and wide open , it just wasnt fast enough. i just bought a 24' with a 250 and kick myself for notgetting the 300 so i wouldnt have to run it WOT to get somewhere

I have a 1910 nautic star with a 115 opti and yeah it does its job just fine, but if I would have a choice I would definitely get a 150 not to mention at least a 21ft boat. 19 is just to short for when the waves start to build.
We run about 37 tops with a light chop, 3 guys, 49 gallons, and fish box full of ice and icechest under leaning post full of ice. If it wasn't for the chop we'd probably do around 34-35. Fastest I ever got the boat was 42mph, chop, two guys 1/4 tank of gas and no fishing equipment |

i have a 1810 nautic star with a 115 yamaha 4 stroke. i had 4 adults and a full tank of gas (35 gallons) trimed all the way up and got 42mph out of it. with just me and the wife and a full tank of gas i get 46. always put the max hp. its worth the extra coins!!

i have a 18' 6" bluewave with a 90 and it pushes me fine. im not gonna break a speed record but not gonna break my wallet towing or using it either. i can get around 40 in it on a good day. i would say depending on the boat whether its enough

18-19 ft. bay boats run great with 200's on them. always over power with in moderation. "Its always better to have more horsepower then balls" said my late Grandpa!

We've got a 15 ft Robicheaux air boat with 502/ 550hp big block in it, and at 38-4200 it will make a grown man **** his britches, but at 52-5400 the freeker lays down and flat gets it! Intelligent? NO! Fun? Unbeliveable!lol

Take a look at the yamaha website. Its some times hard to draw a conclusion, but by comparing the closest boats possible i came up with this. The old model Nautic Star, the 1900 weighs about 150#s more than the current 1910 model. It is also appx 10" narrower.
1900 w/4s 150 ............1910 w/4s 115 5.37mpg@ 22mph .........5.2mpg @ 20mph 5.2 @ 34 ...........................4.6 @ 35 4.39 @ 44 .........................3.9 @ 43wot 3.4 @ 53.6wot If I were going to run around at the boats peak point of effiiciency it really wouldnt make a difference. But like most I want to be going at least 35 - 40 mph. These numbers make me think that the boat will be most economical with the larger engine. In actuality, it will probably be a bit better than these numbers since the 1910s weigh less and is narrower. It may not play out for all boats but for this one it did. I would get the max size engine. Gator Last edited by TxGator; 08-10-2011 at 03:42 PM. Reason: scrambled |
