Found a app that gives real time barge traffic on the intercostal waterway, so when coming or leaving the island to Herbert's you can see what bridge to take, life saver for me and my wife cause we live out here and fight the bridge everyday, the app is called marine traffic, big thanks to capt. Barry Reed for turning me on to this! Check it out

Used to use it at work all the time. Most of the time them barges are a good 30mins ahead of what it shows. Sometimes even worse

Boat captains have to be really up to the hour on their AIS for that to work properly.

Well the last two days including just a little bit a ago it's been jam on accurate, when I click on the boat icons on the app map it shows udates about every 2 min, even shows the barges names and speeds. Looks like the barges are being tracked by GPS automaticaly?

The app works really good.. I'm a offshore crewboat captain and use the app more than my ais for some reason. Really like it on crewchange day..

It gets the GPS position out of the ais. Some good websites out there as well. Ship finder, vessel tracker, etc.. I use them a lot when expecting a vessel somewhere for service. For instance. One tug that I need to do some computer work on is headed to Baton Rouge. Yesterday he was in Galveston. Now I know to get prepared for Monday. Technology is awsome.
